ZENITH: PRIVATE SPACE - by Victoria Allen

At end of a long day, it is a sliver of zenith to enter into your own private space where the cares of the world are left behind and one can rejuvenate, even regenerate the mind as well as the body.

The Zenith private area calls to you on the way home, it provides the perfect place for rest and relaxation. Ensconced by walls for privacy and yet open to the skies and view. Here one is treated to the sounds of the birds and the feel of a warm sultry Australian breeze as you enjoy the open air. Bathe, sleep, read, relax, watch the sun setting over the land, let all the cares and worries dissipate leaving them behind you as you float way in this organic haven of peace.

Water flows like a waterfall, fire flickers with eye-catching fascination, pillows beckon and entice. Natural colours and elements provide the peace and tranquillity which flows from the inside to the outside, as one breathes away the stressors of busy life. The Zenith private space depicts a rolling wooden open ceiling giving the space a cocoon appeal, a space to center, to nourish until the time is right to return with renewed focus and fresh vitality. The levels of the space invite private corners and finally at the base, a thermal hot pool.

“The parallel lines of a rectangular-shaped fire are the perfect match with the clean lines of today’s contemporary living. There’s great synergy,” says Stephane Thomas, director of The Fire Company, creator of EcoSmart Fire.

EcoSmart’s XL burners and even several of the BK Series square-shaped burners are increasingly being used to create a ‘stretched’ flame. They’re now a vital accoutrement in a designer’s palette of tools and are being integrated into specially-made cabinetry, media units, walls, ‘floating’ timber or stone benches and pillars – to name but a few.

The linear features and absolute versatility of the XL burners ensure they can be easily integrated into a horizontal piece of architecture. And depending on the desired outcome, a diverse range of materials can be used in the construction. For example, burners have been incorporated into concrete and hard timber benches, set into marble recesses, into stacked stone walls, stainless steel – even metal barrels which have been cut in half.

“Rather than being an afterthought, EcoSmart’s burners are now a principal design tool; part of the overall solution of indoor and outdoor environments. And each one is personally styled for a lasting impression,” Thomas says.

A growing trend is to incorporate burners into sophisticated media rooms, as a core part of the media/entertainment unit. “Simply put, big screen TVs are ‘forced’ into the background as the remnants of an earlier technology obsessed decade, while something more traditional and beautiful becomes today’s focal point,” Thomas says.

EcoSmart’s XL Series of stainless steel burners comprises three different sizes – the XL900, XL700 and XL500.

<img alt="Home is where the hearth is" src="http://www.ecosmartfire.com/media/blogs/hotels.jpg />

A residential respite

In New York, the luxury AKA Sutton Place has recently opened the striking a.lounge, a place where residents can relax and enjoy coffee and pastries in the morning and wine and cocktails in the evening.

Designed by the acclaimed Meyer Davis Studio, known for celebrated NYC restaurants Locanda Verde and Boqueria as well as noteworthy hospitality and residential projects around the US, the a.lounge has been created to artfully complement Sutton Place’s traditional warmth with a relaxing ambiance.

An EcoSmart Fire XL700 burner has been incorporated into a setting with a marble top – a design element consistent with the lounge’s stunning marble bar – and is surrounded by blackened steel on two sides and above.

“The open fireplace is the centre element of the lounge, creating a focal point that divides the seating groups,” explains Meaghan Wren from Meyer Davis Studio. “It’s the feature that can be seen from all areas of the space and enhances the warmth of the walnut panelled room.”

Meaghan says it was very important to have an open fire in the lounge. “We love the sense of comfort a fireplace gives,” she says. “To have a fireplace in a hotel where most guests stay for weeks and months at a time helps provide a home away from home feeling.”

Given that many places in New York City are not equipped to have a fireplace because of ventilation issues, the Meyer Davis team discovered EcoSmart Fire while researching ventless options. “We love the modern look of the EcoSmart products,” Meaghan says. “The ventless aspect of the system is important because we are able to use them in places where ventilation is not possible.”

Down to business

Luxury hotels targeting the business market are also embracing the new home away from home trend. The award-winning Westin Hotel in Sydney has recently added its very own personal touch with the opening of its new Lobby Room, a private retreat for business travellers.

Interior designer Joseph Pang wanted to create an atmosphere akin to being in your own lounge room, which he has achieved through chocolate hues and robust textures. A key feature of the space – and the main focal point for the central sitting area – is its open fireplace, created using an EcoSmart Fire BK5 Burner with stainless steel surrounds and a toughened glass screen.

The fire has been set into a special feature wall, with black gloss, random sized ceramic tiles. Flanking the fireplace are specially positioned round mirrors, with two lounge chairs situated either side of the fire.

“The EcoSmart Fire creates an intimate, warm and homely feel, similar to a lounge room environment,” explains project designer Rebecca Ng from Joseph Pang Design Consultants. “The fire is safe, reliable, contemporary and elegant.”

The new Lobby Room was part of a refurbishment and extension of the hotel’s Lobby Bar and Lounge. According to Rebecca, the complete look needed to project a stronger sense of identity whilst maintaining the hotel’s five-star image, particularly in light of the numerous new and trendy boutique venues which had opened in the vicinity.

A stylish drawcard

In London, a Triple Burner Kit from EcoSmart Fire is also creating an intimate atmosphere in another high end luxury hotel refurbishment: the stylish new May Fair Bar at The May Fair Hotel – now acclaimed as the best hotel bar in London.

“We needed a stylish solution with a proper wow factor to please our high profile clientele,” says Wayne Coddington, from The Radisson, owners of The May Fair Hotel. “EcoSmart Fire’s triple burner kit offered unlimited design flexibility and emission-free ethanol fuelled heating.”

Wayne says the EcoSmart Fire has already become a major drawcard for May Fair Bar patrons. “The resulting design certainly exceeded our expectations. Its powerful, bright yellow flame is an attractive drawcard. May Fair Bar guests cross the full length of the bar to come and sit next to the fireplace, which is both a functional and contemporary design showpiece,” he says.

<img alt="Alexandria Design Studio" src="http://www.ecosmartfire.com/media/blogs/SHOWROOM_700px.jpg />

“Moving to Alexandria was the natural next step for EcoSmart Fire,” says Jenny Price, international marketing manager, The Fire Company. “We have created an inspirational design destination for both the industry and consumers to experience how EcoSmart Fires can transform a space.

“This is a place where we all feel at home, and it represents our three core branding messages – lifestyle, design and warmth. We invite design professionals and consumers alike to come in and experience how they can enhance their lifestyle by taking a ‘traditional’ concept – the open fire – but using it in ways they never imagined.

“Ultimately our design studio gives our customers confidence that they are making the right choice in ‘moving to modern’, based on seeing first hand the products in operation; and that we understand what the flame can offer and how to best use EcoSmart Fire to achieve their own creative visions.”

As part of this vision, the studio not only features the freestanding, portable EcoSmart Fires, but also showcases a range of burners and fireboxes which have been installed into tailor-made settings to highlight the absolute versatility of EcoSmart Fires and demonstrate how the fires can be used in residential and commercial environments. It also illustrates the types of materials that can be incorporated into bespoke designs.

PURPOSE BUILT

Designed by John Dimopoulos from Geoform Design Architects and designer of the Zeta, one of EcoSmart’s award-winning freestanding fires, the studio has been designed to mirror the energy, mystery, originality and eco-responsibility of EcoSmart Fires. Geoform’s brief was to create a space that was ‘industrial chic.’

“The first thing we noticed was that the space is an unusually well lit environment, under the dramatic glazed sawtooth roof form,” John explains. “This was quite a challenge, given that the product is best viewed in controlled dark environments.

“We responded to this by ‘borrowing’ the zig-zag energy of the form and counter-balancing the brightness with darkness.

“The high ceiling angled folded steel plates suggest a flickering and dancing of flames, hinting at the many layers of EcoSmart Fires subtly woven into the architectural expression of the space. The large scale of the room also enabled us to super size elements such as the entrance desk.”

The signature entrance table is made up of 2.7 tonnes of steel and complemented by a high gloss floor providing a stunning entry point. Steel is also used for the concertina walls that create the display zones along the street frontage. Timber features widely, and has been used for the flooring, to ‘enclose’ the reception space, and for the floating cabinetry that sits behind the reception area, thus providing warmth and contrast between the steel and wood.

“Even the graphic elements are strategically designed to add a feminine touch to the space and soften the architectural lines that are created by the steel, concrete and timber.”

“The expansive use of individual ‘kiss cut’ circles in our graphics adds movement and energy to the space,” Jenny adds. “It’s much the same as our product – the architectural stainless steel and housing methods of a beautiful and organic vibrant flame."

<img alt="Hot Kitchen Makeovers" src="http://www.ecosmartfire.com/media/portfolios/Guy-Grossi/Guy-Grossi-Kitchen-AUS/Guy-Grossi-Kitchen.jpg />

“In recent times a significant trend towards designers and architects using EcoSmart Fireboxes to create a distinct design / fire solutions,” says Jenny Price, Marketing Manager of The Fire Company. “The versatility of the EcoSmart stainless steel firebox inserts means they can be simply and cleverly incorporated into custom-made settings to enhance both a home’s distinctiveness and the residents’ lifestyle.

“The EcoSmart firebox inserts have been designed to work well with a wide range of building materials and finishes and can be used to create a contemporary or traditional look depending on an the décor design style.”

In Melbourne Australia, a tailor-made EcoSmart Fire defines the open plan kitchen and dining area at the home of renowned celebrity chef and restaurateur Guy Grossi, who is frequently sought to present his expertise in Italian culture and hospitality around the world.

Architect Nicholas Murray chose the EcoSmart Fire because his client had wanted a fireplace, but a traditional one wasn’t feasible due to the amount of glazing in the newly extended home.

The solution was to incorporate an EcoSmart Fire into the end of the white-toned Corian Island bench. The stainless steel firebox adds a distinct industrial touch and ties in perfectly with the kitchen’s other stainless steel elements including benchtops and kickboards.

The end result is a fire that not only defines the kitchen area and creates a design statement, it also enhances the ambience and warmth of the dining space, which the kitchen opens out onto.

“The Guy Grossi installation application perfectly shows that the clean lines of EcoSmart Fires enable design professionals and householders to realise their visions. And what better space to install a fire into; many of today’s contemporary kitchens are all about clean lines, sleek surfaces and linear spaces.”

A stainless steel EcoSmart Firebox (model 900SS) is also a unique island feature of another new, contemporary kitchen. This was installed into a long Nero Assoluto granite benchtop (absolute black with a high gloss shine), which connects the kitchen to the living area for an open plan ambience.

“Combined with the kitchen’s mood lighting, the fire provides a dramatic feature for both spaces,” says Jenny. “Both of these installations show that EcoSmart Fires can be used in original settings – regardless of the colour palette and materials used in the kitchens.”

The clean-burning, renewable energy source – bioethanol – is another reason EcoSmart Fires are being installed, Jenny says. “It makes for a no-fuss, eco-friendly fireplace, and the fact that it burns clean means there’s little maintenance,” she adds.

We’re proud that Fire Bowls have found their way into numerous projects around the country. Although the original wood-burning versions have their unique character and remain popular, we identified some projects where a simpler integrated burner system might suit better. Rooftop gardens for example, where managing timber fuel stocks can be difficult. That’s when we called on the expertise of Agnews to help find the right fire system for the Fire Bowl and they came up with a slick EcoSmart Burner kit by The Fire Company that proportions well with the Fire Bowl and provides the dramatic flame effect we were looking for. The burner is easy to manage, it runs on ethanol, a renewable clean burning liquid fuel. The EcoSmart solution seemed to have all of the credentials that were important to us. We’re thrilled with the new version. It looks sensational with its polished stainless steel burner contrasting against the weathered patina of the Fire Bowl. Together we’ve managed to take an already good product to another level”
